Canary Islands shine in Madrid with fashion, craftsmanship & sustainability
On September 10th, 2024, the Serrería Belga Auditorium in Madrid hosted a one-of-a-kind event under the banner “Canarias Islas de Moda”. Organized by Proexca and the island governments of La Palma, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and Lanzarote, the showcase took place during Madrid Fashion Week and spotlighted the best of sustainable fashion, island craftsmanship, and local gastronomy.
The event featured a unique format: a live fashion performance with full island looks, cocktail tasting with Canary products, and a DJ set to set the mood. Among the featured brands, Maru-La Palma stood out with its #DesignerBags #MadeInLaPalma, emphasizing local craftsmanship, sustainability, and timeless style.
“Canary fashion is no longer a hidden gem,” stated Alfonso Cabello, Vice President of the Canary Government and President of Proexca. “It contributes 2.7% to the regional GDP and provides over 1,000 direct jobs – it deserves to be treated as the full-fledged industry it is.”
Besides engaging with national fashion media, the event allowed for deep networking among designers, brand owners, and industry professionals. Future appearances at London Fashion Week and Atelier Couture were also previewed.
For Maru-La Palma, it was a key step in expanding its presence across the Spanish mainland and reinforcing its values as a #SlowFashion brand with deep roots in La Palma.
